Oxford City 03:30
In Oxford City lived a lady And she was beautiful and fair And she was courted by a sailor And he did love her as his dear He said my dear let us get married Let us now no longer stay I’ll work for you both late and early if you my wedded bride will be This girl she loved him but at a distance She did not seem to be quite so fond He said my dear you seem to slight me I’m sure you love some other man He saw her dancing with some other A jealous thought came to his mind And to destroy his own true lover He gave to her a glass of wine So soon she drank it so soon she felt it Oh hold me fast my dear said she Is it that glass of wine you gave me That takes my innocent life away That glass of wine now which I gave you That glass of wine did poison hide For if you won’t be my true lover You’ll never be no other man’s bride That glass of wine now which I gave you Oh I have drinked of the same said he So in each other’s arms we’ll die now To warn young men of jealousy Oh hark oh hark the cocks are crowing The daylight now will soon appear And in my cold cold grave I am going And it’s you Willie has called me there

Lucy Wan 04:18
Lucy she sits in her father's door Weeping and making moan By in comes her brother dear What ails thee Lucy Wan I ail I ail dear brother she cries I'll tell you the reason why There is a child between my sides Between you dear brother and I Hast thou told our mother of this And hast thou told of me It's your fine form I cannot resist I must spoil your pretty body Lucy she saw him draw the knife That's hung down by his knee And he he has took fair Lucy's life And left her there to bleed He has run down to the dock To board some ship to flee His face all white and ill with shock When he his mother did see What is the blood that stains your knife That runs so fresh and raw That is the blood of my good greyhound For she would run no more The greyhound's blood is never so red Son come tell to me Then it is the blood of my good grey mare She would not ride for me Oh the grey mare's blood is never so red Son you lie to me It is not the blood of my good grey mare But the blood of our Lucy By night he laid down his head Upon the cold dark sea A spirit drew up by his bed Vengeance for to seek Lucy she appeared so fine Her body cut in three Brother I will haunt thy mind For what you did to me By he is possessed with shame He ails with guilt and dread He's pushed the knife in his own heart And now he's laid there dead

cw: rape As I rode out one morning in May I spied a pretty fair maid, alone she did stray A finer young maiden I never did see I bid her good morning come wander with me Kind Sir I can see your robes they are grand The gloves are costly that cover your hands I'm a poor young maiden whose status is low So not to insult you my answer is no I care not for riches or kings in their courts I seek to lie with you by persuasion or force I drew up to the maiden so fair and so fine Your lily-white body it soon will be mine I took her by the hand and the middle so small I laid her down in the rushes so tall I raped her in the green bush that morning in May These things they can happen when alone maids do stray

about

Never So Red challenges out of date and harmful narratives and stereotypes, in traditional music and in everyday life. Women are not responsible for men’s projected feelings and don’t deserve to be punished for them. Women are powerful and wise, not voiceless victims. Sexual violence happens and should be called out, not swept under the rug. Chasing and pressure is not the way to go about love and sex. Expression of love and sexuality should be free for everyone.

I’m also unashamedly bringing together my love for electronic music and my love for traditional music. Never So Red is packed with all sorts of sounds: mega synth riffs with four on the floor kick, hazily manipulated vocal textures and rhythms, straight up trad fiddle, smooth synth bass, lo-fi elements, bare, acoustic pizzicato and raw, vulnerable vocals.

The name of the EP, never so red, comes from the lyrics of Lucy Wan, where Lucy’s brother and murderer tries to escape the blame and pass off Lucy’s blood as the blood of a dog or a mare. His mother sees through his lies straight away and says ‘the greyhound/grey mare’s blood is never so red’. This speaks so much about the perceptions of women’s experiences and the skewing of these perceptions by those who want to diminish women’s voices. Often truths that women live are belittled or censored by people in power. Things that women go through are often called taboo and not talked about. This is isolating and can make women feel like their experiences and feelings aren’t valid. I don’t want to perpetuate this in the music I sing. I want to challenge harmful stereotypes and narratives. I want to empower people with my music, those in the songs and those listening to them.
